Russia rejects Biden’s conditions for Ukraine talks
Kremlin dismisses US president’s remark about negotiations.
Moscow is “obviously” not ready to accept U.S. President Joe Biden’s terms for negotiations over Ukraine, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
“What did President Biden say in fact? He said that negotiations are possible only after Putin leaves Ukraine,” a condition Russia “obviously” rejects, Peskov told reporters Friday as reported by AFP.
“The special military operation is continuing,” Peskov said, using Moscow’s term to refer to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine which began in February.
Russian President Vladimir Putin “remains open to contacts, to negotiations, which is very important,” he added.
In a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Biden said Thursday he was “prepared to speak with Mr. Putin if in fact there is an interest in him deciding he’s looking for a way to end the war.”
“If that’s the case, in consultation with my French and my NATO friends, I’ll be happy to sit down with Putin to see what he wants, has in mind,” Biden added.
